    MILD SPOILERS

After meeting his end during a mission, co*cky fighter pilot Pete Sandidge (Spencer Tracy) returns to Earth as a guardian angel to help pass his experience onto a young flyer (Van Johnson), who finds himself falling for the girl Pete left behind (Irene Dunne) in the process, in Victor Fleming’s romantic fantasy drama.

During and just after the war a lot of films focused on the afterlife in their stories, trying to give some sort of comfort to audiences who had either lost loved ones or were serving themselves, but I think this pales in comparison to something like A Matter of…

Endured two hours ofSpencer Tracy for approximately 45 minutes of Van Johnson and 2 minutes of Esther Williams. A new record!

In addition to being almost 20 years older than Van, Irene Dunne was somehow also older than both Spencer Tracy andWard Bond?! Absolutely astonishing.

What a charming movie. Watching Irene Dunne taking down the enemy like a bamf was amazing!

  • Review by Shea ★★★★

Irene Dunne is stronger than the entire US military.

I'm not a Spencer Tracy hater but I just didn't understand what could possibly Irene Dunne's character, Dorinda, could see in his character, Pete. I just didn't find his character that interesting so I lost the emotional connection with this film.

But then again, Dunne and Van Johnson's characters getting together was even worse. I did enjoy Ward Bond's performance though...

Steven Spielberg liked this film so much that he remade this film as Always.

    A Guy Named Joe:
Wow. Really surprised and one I’d want to watch again soon. This film has everything I love about old classic feel and the acting just adds to that. This film explores surprisingly deep and complex concepts and is one I am sure to like more over time. It felt similar to a matter of life and death but it worked better for me because it was more straightforward in its approach. Now that’s not me saying I don’t like ambiguous films but I just think it worked better in this case.

    Conclusion:
One I enjoyed and one to remember. Give it a try.

A refreshingly bittersweet wartime fantasy romance with several inventive concepts about the afterlife. Spencer Tracy goes very broad with his performance, but it’s still nice nonetheless.

Part of my 5 Directors x 5 Unseen Films (22) challenge.

Having recently watched Victor Fleming's romantic aviation drama "Test Pilot" (1939) with Spencer Tracy, it was fun to see the director-actor duo back together challenging the skies in this WWII flying saga. The script was crafted by Dalton Trumbo from the story by David Boehm and Chandler Sprague, who were nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Writing, Original Story.

Pete Sandidge (Tracy) is an Army Air Corps Major during WWII. He has a best friend in Al Yackey (Ward Bond) and a girl in Dorinda Durston (Irene Dunne). But he's a hot dog among flyers who bomb targets in Germany, taking risky chances that endanger him and his…

'No man is really dead unless he breaks faith with the future, and no man is really alive unless he accepts his responsibility to it..' (Lionel Barrymore as The General)

Brief Synopsis: The fanciful tale of a fighter pilot (Spencer Tracy) killed in action and sent back to earth by the Heavenly General (Barrymore) to guide the destiny of a young airman (Van Johnson) who soon falls in love with the dead guy's grieving girl (Irene Dunne), much to his ghostly chagrin!

Almost fifty years after Victor Fleming's mélange of fantasy, combat action, comedy and love drama was released, a guy named Steven Spielberg declared it to be his favourite film and somewhat unwisely decided to embark on a remake,…

  • Review by PUNQ ★★★

A little too much on the romantic side of death, but if anyone has the personality to give death life, it's Spencer Tracy. In many ways he dampens the fear of dying. It's most comforting. Sure, there is the longing of losing someone, but the story gives relevance to move on and accept the end not the worst thing to happen to a good fellow. A mentality very related to the war they were in. Not a life changing movie, but perhaps a death changing one.
