All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (1)

Anya Taylor-Joy has become one of Hollywood's most coveted young actors, as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga makes its way to cinemas this weekend and her surprise role in Dune: Part Two paves the way for a bigger place for her in today's movie landscape.

Here we rank Anya Taylor-Joy's movies, from her breakthrough role in Robert Eggers' The Witch to box-office hits like The Super Mario Bros Movie. As the movies in this list show, the actor's fame has been gradually growing over the last decade, briefly stepping into big franchises like Marvel and working with renowned filmmakers like M Night Shyamalan.

Many viewers started to really notice Taylor-Joy, though, thanks to Netflix's hit show The Queen's Gambit, which became a global phenomenon during the COVID pandemic back in 2020. The actor also joined the cast of the beloved British show Peaky Blinders for its fifth and sixth season, where she played Michael Gray's wife Gina.

Through her characters on screen, Anya Taylor-Joy has pushed to represent female rage. "I’ve developed a bit of a reputation for fighting for feminine rage, which is a strange thing, because I’m not promoting violence – but I am promoting women being seen as people,” she told GQ. "We have reactions that are not always dainty or un-messy."

Here we rank all Anya Taylor-Joy movies from worst to best.

Playmobil: The Movie (2019)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (2)

Playmobil: The Movie brought the famous toys to the big screen, but viewers were not there for it.

Anya Taylor-Joy led the cast as Marla Brenner, a teenager who feels overprotective of her younger brother Charlie (Gabriel Bateman) after their parents died in an accident. When Charlie sneaks out to visit a Playmobil exhibit at the museum and Marla follows him to tell him off, both of them are transported to the Playmobil world.

Unlike Taylor-Joy's The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this family adventure didn't stick the landing.

Amsterdam (2022)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (3)

For all the stars plaguing this movie (including Taylor Swift, believe it or not), Amsterdam was just not very good.

Inspired by a true story, the movie follows the friendship between doctor Burt Berendsen (Christian Bale), nurse Valerie Voze (Margot Robbie) and lawyer Harold Woodsman (John David Washington) during the 1930s. One day, they get tangled in a murder mystery, which is just one aspect of a much wider conspiracy threatening the US.

The plot of David O Russell's film is busy and confusing at times, and viewers didn't care for any of its characters – not even Anya Taylor-Joy's Libby Voze.

The New Mutants (2020)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (4)

There was so much promise in this atypical X-Men movie, which united Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams, Stranger Things' Charlie Heaton, The Originals' Blue Hunt and rising star Anya Taylor-Joy.

However, despite having good ideas and a compellingly different concept, The New Mutants failed at building interesting characters and giving depth to its story. Some critics called it "the worst X-Men movie ever". Ouch.

The film follows five teenage mutants who undergo treatments at a secret institution. Taylor-Joy played Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik, a Russian mutant with sorcery powers and sister of X-Men member Colossus.

Morgan (2016)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (5)

A very young Anya Taylor-Joy starred in this sci-fi thriller alongside Kate Mara, Toby Jones and Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie.

Morgan is the name of a bioengineered child (Taylor-Joy) who started walking and talking after only one month of existence. Despite exceeding expectations, Morgan rebels, attacking one of her handlers, which leads them to trap her in a remote facility to determine her fate. But this synthetic human is smarter than all of them, and chaos ensues as they are unable to contain her.

Sounds like a violent version of Ex Machina, but it never gets to be as smart or fascinating as Alex Garland's movie.

Here Are the Young Men (2021)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (6)

Anya Taylor-Joy reunited with Peaky Blinders co-star Finn Cole in this disappointing drama, based on Rob Doyle's 2014 novel.

Here Are the Young Men follows three high school graduates in Dublin who, not clear about what they want to do with their lives from now on, decide to start by celebrating their new freedom. However, Matthew, Kearney and Rez see themselves involved in a terrible accident, which will force them to face their darkest thoughts.

Anya Taylor-Joy plays their intelligent classmate Jen, who, unlike them, has very clear and ambitious plans for her future. The cast also includes Games of Thrones star Dean-Charles Chapman and Vikings star Ferdia Walsh-Peelo.

Glass (2019)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (7)

The end of Split revealed a connection to 2000's superhero movie Unbreakable, with Bruce Willis reprising his role of David Dunn.

With Glass, M Night Shyamalan completed an unexpected trilogy reuniting Willis, Samuel L Jackson (who plays Elijah Price) and James McAvoy for one last powered-up adventure. While saving people in the streets of Philadelphia, David bumps into The Beast (and his 23 personalities) and both are arrested and brought along with Elijah to a very weird therapy session. Do they really have powers, or are they just mentally unstable?

Anya Taylor-Joy also reprises her role of Casey after surviving the previous movie, although her role in this last movie is significantly smaller.

Barry (2016)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (9)

This Netflix original movie is not really a biopic of Barack Obama, but it uses the former US President's university years to talk about racial and class politics in the country.

Devon Terrell stars in the movie as a young Obama, while Anya Taylor-Joy plays a fictional character named Charlotte Baughman, who is a combination of several real-life girlfriends he had during that period.

The Secret of Marrowbone (2018)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (10)

Anya Taylor-Joy joined 1917's George MacKay, Stranger Things' Charlie Heaton and future Emma co-star Mia Goth in this psychological horror movie by Spanish director Sergio G. Sánchez.

The Secret of Marrowbone follows a group of siblings who relocate from England to their mother's estate in Maine, where they will have to face a sinister presence.

The movie had a lukewarm reception, as critics noted that a notable setting and cast can't make up for a flimsy plot. Sadly, Sánchez could not replicate the magic of JA Bayona's The Orphanage, which he wrote.

The Super Mario Bros Movie (2023)

One of the highest-grossing movies of 2023, The Super Mario Bros Movie gave Anya Taylor-Joy the opportunity to voice one of the most famous characters in the Mario Bros franchise, Princess Peach.

Unlike the infamous 1993 movie, this new animated movie was developed by Nintendo alongside Despicable Me creators Illumination and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, and the results speak for themselves.

Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) save the day in this highly entertaining family adventure movie, filled with nods to the video game and some really pleasant changes.

A sequel, The Super Mario Bros Movie 2, is already underway.

Last Night in Soho (2021)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (12)

The movie follows Eloise (McKenzie), a young woman who moves to London in the hopes of becoming a fashion designer. Not really clicking with her classmates or present-day life in general, she sees herself transported back to the 1960s through the eyes of wannabe singer Sandie (Taylor-Joy). However, Sandie's life was far from perfect, and Eloise starts to suspect she met a tragic fate.

Shout-out to how they filmed the dancing sequence – no effects and a whole lot of rehearsing.

Split (2016)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (13)

Imagine having to act in front of James McAvoy's multiple personalities in Split – Anya Taylor-Joy deserves a raise.

M Night Shyamalan's nail-biting thriller was the young actor's big follow-up to The Witch, which had put her in the spotlight a year prior. She plays Casey, an introverted teenager who gets kidnapped along with two of her classmates.

Their captor is a mysterious guy who juggles between 23 different personalities. Some of them are docile and sympathetic, while others, mainly one known as The Beast, are asking for blood.

The Menu (2022)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (15)

The less you know about this movie before watching, the better. The Menu is one of those wild rides that you never know where it's going to end, and that's the fun of it.

Anya Taylor-Joy plays Margot, a woman invited by her date Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) to an extremely exclusive culinary experience created by famous chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) on a private island. Among tech bros, movie stars, food critics and other privileged guests, working-class girl Margot sticks out, as her presence complicates Slowik's mysterious plans.

Directed by Succession's Mark Mylod, The Menu is a bonkers movie that will have you seated until the end.

So, what does the cheeseburger mean then?

Emma (2020)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (16)

Anya Taylor-Joy was nominated for a Golden Globe thanks to her flawless performance in this adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved novel Emma.

Alongside Johnny Flynn, Bill Nighy, Mia Goth and Challengers star Josh O'Connor, Taylor-Joy deliciously embodied the often irritating entitlement of Emma Woodhouse, a young wealthy woman with too much time on her hands and not enough self awareness.

Too busy meddling in the love lives of her friends, Emma fails to realise her connection to her long-time friend George Knightley (Flynn).

Autumn de Wilde's gorgeous-looking visuals and the cast's incredible charisma made this one of Jane Austen's best-ever adaptations, with Taylor-Joy at the centre of all its excellence.

The Northman (2022)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (17)

After The Witch, Taylor-Joy reunited with director Robert Eggers for the brutal viking epic The Northman, also starring Alexander Skarsgård and Nicole Kidman.

It's absorbing and absolutely savage.

Based on the story of Amleth, which inspired Hamlet, the story follows Amleth as he is forced to leave his home after witnessing the murder of his father, King Aurvandill War-Raven (Ethan Hawke), by his uncle Fjölnir (Claes Bang). Years later, Amleth has become a berserker warrior who rips out throats and howls at the moon, so he decides it's time to take back what was rightfully his.

Taylor-Joy plays Olga, a witch the main hero finds on his journey home and who he falls in love with. As the actor revealed in a recent interview, it was her idea to make Olga slap a Viking with menstrual blood.

Anya Taylor-Joy, you absolute genius.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (18)

Anya Taylor-Joy took over from Charlize Theron to become Imperator Furiosa in this action-packed prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road.

George Miller brings viewers back to Furiosa's childhood, when she was stolen from the Green Place of Many Mothers and forced to join the ranks of the warlord Dementus (played by Chris Hemsworth) and later Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme, replacing the late Hugh Keays-Byrne).

While Alyla Browne plays a younger Furiosa, Taylor-Joy embodies her as she becomes a woman fighting for vengeance and dreaming of going back home.

The actor might not speak many words throughout the film (she had about 30 lines of dialogue), but her performance is powerful and raw.

The Witch (2016)

All 18 Anya Taylor-Joy movies, ranked from worst to best (19)

Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?

Anya Taylor-Joy's first movie is still her best to date. The actor delivers an astounding performance in Robert Eggers' debut film The Witch, which is equal parts terrifying and exhilarating.

Set in 1630's New England, the movie focuses on a family isolated in the middle of nowhere due to their strict religious beliefs. When their youngest son vanishes, the family blames their teenage daughter Thomasin (Taylor-Joy), eventually accusing her of witchcraft.

Paranoia starts to eat the family up from the inside, as a mysterious presence lurks in the nearby forest and tempts Thomasin into a more liberating existence.

It's one of the best horror movies of all time.
