Anthony Simonsen edges Marshall Kent at PBA Finals (3)

The PBA national television schedule of singles events for 2024 ended on Sunday after nine hours of coverage by CBS Sports Network.

And, when the final games ended, it wasn’t enough to determine a champion between Marshall Kent and Anthony Simonsen.

Kent won the Group 1 stepladder as the No. 1 seed and Simonsen advanced as the No. 2 seed, winning a ninth and 10th frame rolloff over top seed Jason Belmonte when Belmonte opened with a 5-count and only got two on the fill. Simonsen doubled to send him to the final show against Kent in another race to two.

The pair split games and went to the ninth and 10th frame when Kent left a weak 10 and battling a very sore thumb that he was shaking the entire last game, missed the 10 and got two strikes and eight to finish at 38. Simonsen went strike, 10 pin spare (just barely) and then struck for the 40-38 win.

It was good to see Dave Ryan and Randy Pedersen working together for the two-day telecast. That’s not easy to stay energized for four hours on Saturday and then five hours on Sunday. CBS Sports Network does a good job with that show every year, but it is just hard for people to find it when the PBA or PWBA is on that channel.

The next television opportunity for the PBA Tour is the PBA League in mid-September from Portland, Maine.

Southern Impact Handicap Singles

A total of 163 bowlers took part in a handicap singles tournament, that paid out $6,527 in the Southern Impact Bowling Club event which has a similar format to the old BR Singles event, but with a 32-player bracket.

Amy Thibodaux won the event, going through the 32-player bracket for $1,270 first-place prize. Spotting 112 pins to Keenan Louviere in handicap, Louviere won the title with a two-game handicap total of 489-464.

Thibodaux defeated Marlon Hinton 441-437 in his opening match and then it went pretty easy from there. She downed Andrew Borden, 532-433; Brek Cupp in the quarterfinals, 485-471; and Steve Craighead in the semifinal round, 518-468.

Louviere, who defeated Bailee Chapman in the semifinals, won $635 for second.

Craighead and Chapman each earned $267 for the semifinals. The four whose tournament ended in the round of eight — Cupp, Sedric Withrow, Martin Mercadel Jr., and Kenneth Keton, Jr., each earned $178.

National high school championships

Division II state champion Archbishop Shaw took part in the U.S. High School Bowling National Championships this past weekend at Leisure Lanes in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The Eagles in qualifying started slow in the traditional five-player scoring averaged over 210 in the six Baker games to advance through the first round of the 51-team field, finishing in the final advancing position at 3,134 in 16th place.

After three more Baker games, Shaw was eliminated from the competition in 15th place, but that was a good showing. Ashland High School of Ohio won the boys title.

In singles, Shaw's Josh Collins and Jonathan Arena, Jadon Lieu of Patrick Taylor and Carter Santangelo of John Curtis made the first cut of 150 from 362 entries. Lieu showed a lot of perseverance after a 117 opening game, he came back with 212-247-265 for an 841 four-game set.

The event continued Monday. We’ll update the finish in our next column. That will come up on June 25. Until then, good luck and good bowling.
