Celebrating the end of a chapter and the beginning of new adventures! GIS at ASU bids farewell to another incredible semester with gratitude and joy. It was a night filled with heartfelt speeches, laughter, and reminiscing as we came together to honor our graduates and recognize the hard work of all our members. Reflecting on the success of GIS Exam 101, hosted by GIS at ASU, we extend our gratitude to all who made it possible. Led by shadow student Gokul Achaththekoot and co-president Sarah Friedman, the event provided invaluable insights into exam registration procedures, optimal study timelines, and the alignment of ASU courses with industry-standard Actuarial exams. Attendees delved into the power of Coaching Actuaries, with exclusive discounts ensuring equitable access to premium study materials. Interactive sessions with seasoned exam-takers and graduate students fostered a collaborative spirit within the GIS fraternity, enriching the experience for all. As we look back on this event, we are grateful for the support of our members and presenters, and we eagerly anticipate many more enriching experiences in the future.

The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) recently hosted the annual Case Study Competition at Arizona State University’s Gamma Iota Sigma Kappa Chapter (GIS at ASU). This competition provides students with the opportunity to tackle real-world actuarial challenges. Four teams competed on March 26th, working on a Property & Casualty (P&C) related challenge to create insightful reports for a fictional insurance firm. Each team had 15 minutes to present their findings to a panel of judges from the P&C insurance industry, followed by a Q&A session. Team Statistically Significant emerged as the winners, with Chief Actuaries securing second place. GIS at ASU thanks CAS, the judges, and all participating students for their contributions.

Administered by the NAIW International Legacy Foundation, the Norm Ziegler Trailblazer Scholarship supports undergraduate and graduate students pursuing careers in the insurance and risk management industry. Established in honor of Norm Ziegler, a respected figure in the insurance field known for his mentorship and leadership, the scholarship aims to continue his legacy by providing educational opportunities for future professionals. The NAIW Legacy Foundation, formed in 2006 as part of the International Association of Insurance Professionals, manages the scholarship program as part of its commitment to advancing education within the industry.

Midterms loom and spring break beckons, so members gathered to destress and explore STEM accessibility with Piece of the Pi. Hosted by GIS at ASU, the event featured Ainsley Ramsey, Noel Steinbeck, Olivia Braymiller, Gina Gilkey, and Brisa Silis Gomez from POTP, who shared their mission and fundraising goals. POTP aims to raise $15,000 this year for scholarships and STEM programs, with events like a Panel Professionals gathering and support for initiatives like Fund-A-Bus and Girls in STEM. To contribute, one can buy merchandise, donate via GoFundMe or Venmo, or participate in local activities like HeyDay Skincare or REV’D Indoor Cycling. Ainsley Ramsey dazzled with a recitation of the first 500 digits of pi, capping off a day of relaxation and camaraderie. Thanks to POTP for their insight and dedication to STEM, and to GIS at ASU members for organizing the event.

From icebreakers to Q&A sessions, the evening was filled with valuable insights into the profession and its potential pathways.The meeting emphasized the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the actuarial field, showcasing success stories and experiences from industry professionals and students alike. Through discussions on career trajectories, exam tracks, and networking opportunities, attendees gained a deeper understanding of the diverse avenues within actuarial science.
