Page 4 HAPPENINGS June 6, 2024 www.hap2it.com Editor's note: This article will discuss spoilers for Pretty Little Liars: Summer School Episode 4. Chandler Kinney said last Thursday's episode of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School led to some confusion. While filming a short film, Tabby (Kinney) called cut, and the crew mistook her for the episode director, Roxanne Benjamin. "Our director would be like, 'No, that's the line, not her directing you guys,'" Kinney told UPI in a Zoom interview from New Zealand, where she was filming Zombies 4. "Those days were really confusing for all of us." Kinney added that some of the footage Tabby's crew filmed will be used in the show. "I don't even know who shot what," Kinney said. "I was holding a camera. The guys were holding cameras." Tabby mounted the production when a film festival asked her for a new submission. The festival had rejected her first short, Avenged, which was based on Tabby's experience in Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. "I think Avenged really serves as an outlet for her to say what she needs to say," Kinney said. "It's really her first time looking her assaulter in the face and having this reckoning and this confrontation." In Original Sin, Chip (Carson Rowland) raped Tabby after raping and impregnating Imogen (Bailee Madison). This occurred while Tabby and her friends were also struggling with A stalking them. In Original Sin, Tabby and Imogen confronted Chip and got his confession. A killed Chip in the season finale. In Avenged, which Tabby screens during the Summer School season, Imogen plays Tabby and tortures the actor playing Chip. "She wasn't given her time and her day in court," Kinney said. "So she's not allowing the system to silence her." Avenged appears in the first episodes of Summer School and Kinney said director Maggie Kiley, and co-creator Lindsay Calhoon Bring, encouraged Kinney to contribute to Tabby's short. Kinney said that it was important to see the Chip character say no, and have his killer ignore him like he ignored consent. "That is a very clear turn and a very clear dismissal of his request," Kinney said. "We talked about circling him when she came in, little things like that." Calhoon Bring and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told UPI that Tabby is the character who represents them. Tabby is a horror movie buff and works in a movie theater, like both Pretty Little Liars creators did as teenagers. "It makes me want to actually have that experience, to be there and make the popcorn," Kinney said. In Summer School, Tabby befriends a new coworker, Christian (Noah Alexander Gerry). She films her second short in the theater, about a killer stalking the theater employees and patrons. Kinney said the second short allows Tabby to reclaim the theater as her safe space. However, even with A gone, there is still a new killer stalking the Pretty Little Liars. "That film really represents her finding her love and joy and passion for filmmaking again," Kinney said. "So much of her journey is disentangling her trauma from that passion and that sacred space." Tabby entertained dating Christian, although seeing his collection of horror masks in his basem*nt gave her pause. Kinney said Tabby is not quite ready to trust a man romantically again. "Even if she makes herself appear open and available, she still has a long way to go in trusting and letting people in again," Kinney said. "I think both her and Imogen do." The new killer is Bloody Rose, who has been testing each of the Pretty Little Liars individually. Mouse (Malia Pyles) and Faran (Zaria) survived theirs. Kinney said Tabby's test is in an upcoming episode. "Tabby will have her final girl moment and it will be epic," Kinney said. "It was definitely the hardest thing I've ever filmed in my entire life." New episodes of Pretty LIttle Liars: Summer School premiere Thursdays on Max. By Fred Topel Chandler Kinney: Film within 'Pretty Little Liars' confused crew Tabby (Chandler Kinney) works at a movie theater in the MAX  original series "Pretty Little Liars: Summer School." Born August 3, 2000 (age 23) Sacramento, California Kinney was drawn to the performing arts from a young age. She began dancing at just three years old and started training in martial arts by the time she was ten. Demonstrating remarkable proficiency, she earned her 1st degree black belt at age 13. Channeling her talents into acting, Chandler gained her first experience in the field at nine years old. Her professional acting debut came with a role in the film "Battlefield America" in 2012. Kinney's acting career gained significant momentum when she joined the Nickelodeon series "Haunted Hathaways" for multiple episodes in 2014. Her talent soon led her to a casting opportunity in the Amazon original series "Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street," where she starred alongside Ashley Boettcher. This role allowed her to leave a lasting impression and pave the way for future opportunities in the industry. Her career took another leap forward in 2019 when she was cast as Willa in Disney's "Zombies 2," further establishing her as a prominent young actress. Apart from her roles in television and film, Chandler has been active in other areas of the entertainment industry. She has appeared in numerous national commercials and has guest-starred on popular shows such as "90210" and "American Horror Story." Additionally, she performed in a piece titled "When I Speak" by acclaimed creator Joss Whedon in 2014, showcasing her versatility and ability to engage with a variety of artistic expressions. Kinney’s career trajectory highlights her evolution from a precocious young talent in martial arts and dance to a recognized actress in both television and film. With each role, she continues to demonstrate her considerable acting skills and charisma, securing her place as a rising star in the entertainment industry. FYI Chandler Kinney

Laughter also increases respiratory rate and oxygen consumption, which boosts a sense of well-being, and in one study, it was found to lower overall glucose levels after a meal. Get Me That, Stat! Drug overdose deaths stayed steady in 2022, according to the CDC, with 107,941 deaths recorded, slightly higher than the 106,699 in 2021. Most of the deaths were linked to fentanyl, a synthetic opioid. Deaths due to heroin, methadone and prescription painkillers have been declining. The Dark Side of Light Air pollution exposure is a known risk factor for strokes because inhaled particulates can cause pulmonary blood vessel inflammation. A new study suggests outdoor light pollution at night may also boost stroke risk. The theory is that too much light at night may interfere with melatonin production and the sound sleep it induces. Stories for the Waiting Room Daily doses of baby aspirin are sometimes recommended for adults to help prevent heart attack or stroke. A small study suggests a similar therapy might help reduce liver fat in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease. MASLD, formerly known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, is widespread. It's estimated that one in three Americans has a problematic amount of fat in their livers, which can ultimately result in scarring and organ dysfunction. It's not known yet how aspirin might decrease liver fat or scarring. Best Medicine Doctor: "How much physical activity do you get each day?" Patient: "I usually sit on a computer for at least 12 hours a day." Doctor: "That's not good for your health." Patient: "You're telling me. I should probably sit on a chair." Observation "Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess was why several of us died of tuberculosis." — American humorist Jack Handey (b. 1949) Medical History This week in 1884, a patent for "flaked cereal" was applied for by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, who was trying to improve the vegetarian diet of his hospital patients by creating a digestible bread substitute using boiled wheat. Kellogg accidentally left a pot of boiled wheat to stand and become tempered. When it was put through a rolling process, each grain of wheat emerged as a large, thin flake. When the flakes were baked, they became crisp and light, creating an easy-to-prepare breakfast when milk was added. Will Keith Kellogg, John's brother, began his cereal-making career in the 1890s when he the flakes' commercial potential and created the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Co. (now Kellogg's). Medical Myths According to some, drinking four glasses of water at the beginning of each day helps prevent heart attacks and remedies various conditions, including diabetes and tuberculosis. It's quite popular in some countries. However, there is no empirical evidence to support the practice. The only medical condition where research has shown increased fluid intake is helpful is constipation. The additional fluid (water or juices) lowers risk of dehydration and may help soften stools, making them easier to pass. It does not, however, necessarily treat the underlying cause of the constipation. Curtain Calls Sunanda Kumariratana was a queen consort of Siam (now Thailand) to King Rama V. In 1880, the boat she was riding on the way to Bang Pa-In Royal Palace capsized, and she was thrown into the water. Contrary to the myth that dozens of people watched her drown (knowing that touching the queen, even if it meant saving her life, was a capital offense), she was pulled from the water, but resuscitation attempts failed. Page 6 HAPPENINGS June 6, 2024 www.hap2it.com Idaho man uses his nose to inflate balloons for world record Serial recordbreaker David Rush earned his 173rd Guinness World Records title by using his nose to inflate 28 balloons in three minutes. Rush, who is on a quest to hold the most concurrent Guinness World Records titles, already held the one minute version of the record, but the three minute version took him 42 attempts to achieve. He was eventually able to inflate 28 balloons in the allotted time, enough to become a co-holder of the title with fellow serial record-breaker Ashrita Furman. Rush is attempting to surpass serial record-breaker Silvio Sabba's total of 180 concurrently-held Guinness World Records titles. An Indian man broke his own Guinness World Record by typing the alphabet in 25.66 seconds using only a keyboard and his nose. Vinod Kumar Chaudhary, 44, first set the Guinness World Record for the fastest time to type the alphabet with the nose in 2023, when he logged a time of 27.8 seconds, and he broke the record again later in the year with a time of 26.73 seconds. Chaudhary has now broken the record a second time, managing the feat in 25.66 seconds. The rules of the record required Chaudhary to type all 26 letters of the Roman alphabet on a standard QWERTY keyboard with a space between each letter. Chaudhary also holds the records for the fastest time to type the alphabet backward (single hand), with a time of 5.36 seconds, and the fastest time to type the alphabet with hands behind the back, at 6.78 seconds. Man wins $50,000 lottery prize using license plate number A Maryland man used his license plate number to win a $50,000 prize from a Pick 5 lottery drawing. The Carroll County man told Maryland Lottery officials he owns three vehicles and regularly uses their license plate numbers to place Pick 5 bets. The man used the license plate number from his Tesla to buy $1 straight bet tickets for the May 22 midday and evening Pick 5 drawings from the Liquor Barn store. The player checked his ticket right after the midday drawing and discovered he had matched the winning numbers, 5-6-8-4-3. The ticket earned him a $50,000 prize. The player said his winnings will help him pay off some bills in preparation for his retirement in July. He said some of the money will also go toward home and garden projects after he retires. Popular weight-loss drugs Wegovy, Ozempic may lower desire for sweets Ozempic and Wegovy appear to improve people's sensitivity to tastes, potentially lowering their desire for sweets, a new study suggests. The active ingredient in the weight-loss medications, semaglutide, also appears to affect the way that the tongue and brain respond to sweet tastes. For the study, researchers randomly assigned obese women to receive either semaglutide injections or a placebo. For four months, researchers measured the participants' taste sensitivity using strips containing different concentrations of tastes. They also used MRI scans to measure brain responses to a sweet solution dripping onto their tongues, both before and after the women ate a standard meal. Researchers also took tissue samples to evaluate genetic activity in the participants' tongues. Women receiving semaglutide experienced changes in their taste perception, in the ways their taste bud genes expressed themselves and the way their brain responded to sweets. Russian propaganda seeks to scare spectators from 2024 Paris Olympics Russia is waging an artificial intelligence disinformation campaign to scare people away from this summer's Olympic Games in Paris, after the country was banned from competition over its war in Ukraine. "Russia has a decades-long history of undermining the Olympics, but for the Paris Games, we've observed this old playbook has been updated with new generative AI tactics," said former FBI agent Clint Watts, who directed the study. "They want to scare spectators from attending the Games for fear of physical violence breaking out." The report says Russia's disinformation campaign, which was created by a group called Storm-1679, has released a film titled "Olympics Has Fallen" with AI-generated audio "impersonating the voice of film actor Tom Cruise" with a script "disparaging the International Olympic Committee's leadership." "The International Olympic Committee has recently been faced with a number of fake news posts targeting the IOC," the committee said in a statement last year, adding that "an entire documentary produced with defamatory content, a fake narrative and false information, using an AI-generated voice of a world-renowned Hollywood actor." The Russian campaign has also flooded social media with short videos that impersonate news reports by the BBC, Al Jazeera, France 24 and other news agencies in an effort to raise fears about terrorist attacks during the Olympics. coast to coast Nebraska woman pronounced dead found alive at funeral home Authorities in Nebraska said a woman who was pronounced dead at her nursing home was found alive two hours later at the funeral parlor. Chief Deputy Ben Houchin of the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office identified the woman in a press conference as 74-year-old Constance Glantz of Lincoln, Neb. He said she was a resident at the Mulberry at Waverly nursing home in Waverly, Neb., just outside of Lincoln, where she was receiving hospice care. The nursing home pronounced Glantz dead, Houchin said, stating its employees then transported the body of a person "they believed was deceased" to the funeral home. At the funeral home, an employee was placing Glantz on to a table to start "their process" when they noticed she was breathing and called emergency services. A spokeswoman for Lincoln Fire and Rescue said funeral home employees were performing C.P.R. on Glantz when they arrived at the scene. Glantz was then transported to a local hospital where she was declared alive. "This is a very unusual case," he said. "I've been doing this 31 years and nothing like this has ever gotten to this point. I'm sure the nursing homes and everybody is going to be taking a look into what has happened and i'm sure they'll look and see if new protocols need to be made or if they were all followed," he said. Page 8 HAPPENINGS June 6, 2024 www.hap2it.com Foundation offers tips for traveling with people with Alzheimer's Experts were expecting this past Memorial Day weekend to be the busiest yet, with nearly 44 million Americans estimated to have traveled over those five days. A fair number of those travelers will have a companion suffering from Alzheimer's disease or another dementia-related illness, according to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA). "Taking a trip can be a fun way to kick off the summer season for someone affected by dementia if caregivers make the proper preparations and adaptations," said Jennifer Reeder, the AFA's director of educational and social services. "Whether traveling by car or mass transit, there are a few steps caregivers can follow to make traveling more comfortable, less stressful and more enjoyable for their loved ones and themselves," Reeder added in an AFA news release. Some of these steps include: • Making sure travel is advisable at all. People early in dementia might still enjoy traveling, but those in the later stages might find it an overwhelming experience. Check with their doctor to make sure they are okay to travel the distance you've planned for your trip. • Plan around the person's abilities and routine. Small or unfamiliar changes can sometimes be too much for a person with dementia. Choose a mode of travel and a schedule that causes the least amount of anxiety and stress by taking into account the person's abilities and needs. For example, they might travel more easily at a specific time of day, or normally eat around a certain time. • Don't overschedule. Overstimulation can cause someone with dementia confusion, agitation or anxiety. Be sure to build in down time to allow the person to rest and recharge. Focus on quality time together, rather than trying to cram in a bunch of sites, attractions and activities. • Pack wisely. Bring snacks, water, fun activities like puzzles and comfort items like a blanket or the person's favorite sweater. Remember an extra set of comfortable clothes, in case you travel somewhere warmer or colder than your home territory. Take important health documentation, a medication list and physician information for your loved one. • Build in break time. Regular breaks on road trips for food, bathroom visits and rest can help the person better enjoy their time with you. • Understand security procedures. Check in advance about an airport's or train station's security screening procedures, and let the person with dementia know what to expect. This can reduce their anxiety. Also, the Transportation Security Administration offers screening assistance to air travelers with dementia-related illnesses; contact the TSA Cares Helpline at least 72 hours prior to your flight to learn more. • Advise the airline. Let your airline know you're traveling with someone who has memory impairment. Tell them about any safety concerns or special needs regarding your loved one. Traumatic brain injury affects 1 in 8 older Americans About one in eight U.S. seniors will be treated for a traumatic brain injury, typically during a fall, a new study finds. Medicare data shows that about 13% of seniors suffered a severe concussion during an average follow-up period of 18 years, researchers report. Although these injuries can be treated, they increase the risk of serious conditions like dementia, Parkinson's disease, seizures, heart disease, depression and anxiety, they added. "The number of people 65 and older with TBI is shockingly high," said senior researcher Dr. Raquel Gardner, a neurologist with the Sheba Medical Center in Israel. For the study, researchers tracked about 9,200 Medicare enrollees with an average age of 75. Women, white people, the healthier and the well-off appear at higher risk of concussion, according to the data -- a finding that runs counter to prior research. For example, about 64% of people who had a traumatic brain injury were female, even though women represented 58% of the total group studied, researchers said. Likewise, about 84% of people in the total group were white, but whites represented 89% of concussions, results show. About 31% of those with traumatic brain injury were in the top 25% of wealth, while 22% were in the lowest quarter, researchers said. Seniors with concussion also were less likely to have lung disease or to struggle with activities of daily living like bathing, walking and getting out of bed. They also were less likely to have dementia. The new study was published recently in the journal JAMA Network Open. "It's possible that our findings reflect that adults who are healthier, wealthier and more active are more able or likely to engage in activities that carry risk for TBI," said lead researcher Erica Kornblith, an assistant professor of psychiatry with the University of California, San Francisco. "While most TBIs in older people occur from falls at ground level, if you are in a wheelchair or bed-bound, you don't have as many opportunities for traumatic injuries," Kornblith added. "It's also possible that participants with cognitive impairment are more limited in their activity and have less opportunity to fall." However, the researchers noted that their findings might only reflect cases in which patients were diagnosed with a concussion and received care. A 2007 study found that 42% of people didn't seek medical attention after receiving a traumatic brain injury. "We know that older adults who experience falls, the largest segment of Americans with TBI, as well as lower-resourced adults -- including those subjected to racial and ethnic micro-aggressions in a medical setting -- are less likely to seek care," Kornblith said in a university news release. "It's possible that our data did not capture the true burden of TBI in this population." Physical activity is being touted as a means of preserving brain health and function as people age, Gardner said. These results show that seniors need to be careful while getting their exercise. "Taking measures to optimize safety and mitigate falls is critical," Gardner said. "These measures need to change over the life-course as an individual accumulates physical or cognitive disabilities, or both." senior update

Page 12 HAPPENINGS June 6, 2024 John Goodman says he thinks his classic blue-collar comedy, Roseanne, and its sequel, The Conners, will be remembered for the love and laughter they offered during difficult circ*mstances that many of its viewers could relate to. "It's all family first. Love is at the center -- and humor. If we didn't have humor, we'd be hopeless," Goodman, 71, told UPI in a recent phone interview. "They wouldn't have kept going. They just need to keep going and they've got the hope that something good is going to turn up and they have the grace to use humor when it doesn't," he added about his fictional family. "There's not a lot of time for examining one's own navel. You've gotta do it and get it done." Roseanne was created by and starred Roseanne Barr. Set in the depressed factory town of Lanford, Ill., it ran from 1988 to 1997. The show was revived for a well-received additional season in 2018, but was quickly canceled after Barr made a racially-charged joke about a government official online. Barr apologized, but was fired. Her beloved matriarch character was killed off and The Conners was created with the surviving characters -- Roseanne's husband Dan (Goodman), her sister Jackie (Laurie Metcalf), her daughters Darlene and Becky (Sara Gilbert and Lecy Goranson) and her grandkids Harris and Mark (Emma Kenney and Ames McNamara). Katey Sagal joined the cast as Dan's second wife Louise, while Jay R. Ferguson stepped in to play Darlene's spouse Ben. Season 6 wrapped up on ABC last week and is available to stream on Hulu. The network announced this month that it renewed the show for a seventh and final season to air in 2024-25. "When we came on the air in 1987, there were a lot of 'richpeople' shows," Goodman said, referring to nighttime soaps like Dynasty, Dallas and Falcon Crest. "We were kind of 'anti-glamour' and it served us well then. I can't presume to say that we are speaking for working-class America, but this family just happens to be that and they are behind the '8 ball' most of the time, handling it with love and humor." Metcalf, 68, praised the show's writers for tapping into the issues and problems viewers might be going through and finding ways to comfort and entertain them during tough times. "Audiences can relate to it and see themselves," she said. "It's always been a really identifiable show to our audience and it continues to be." Goranson, 49, said the creative team behind the show -- as well as the cast -- have tremendous respect for those living, working and struggling in the middle of the United States. "We live in a country where wealth is coveted and people are fascinated by celebrity and superwealth. When you look at some of the shows on television, that's really reflected," she said. "Our show has always represented a demographic that oftentimes feels left behind and neglected. The 'flyover states' is what people call most of America," Goranson added. "As someone who was raised by people from the flyover states, I'm quite proud of us for representing that demographic and portraying them in a way that they are intelligent and sophisticated and have got real problems." Gilbert, 49, said it was a rare honor to play the same character, who started off as a middle schooler and now is the mother of grown children of her own. "It's cool to be able to look back through the [show's] history," she said. "It's amazing. It's a very, unusual, lucky thing to be a part of something that spans decades." By Karen Butler John Goodman: 'Roseanne' & 'The Conners' will be remembered for love, laughs "The Conners" is wrapping up its sixth season last week on ABC and is available to stream on Hulu. The "Roseanne" spin-off has been renewed for a seventh and final season. Born June 20, 1952 (71 years old) St. Louis, Missouri Goodman displayed athletic prowess during his high school years, partaking in both basketball and football. His football skills earned him a college scholarship, an opportunity that might have shaped his initial career trajectory if not for his pivot to acting. This transition led him to eventually becoming one of Hollywood's beloved figures. Goodman gained significant fame for his role as Dan Conner on the popular TV show "Roseanne," which aired from 1988 to 1997. His portrayal not only resonated with audiences but also earned him critical acclaim, culminating in a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in 1993. Beyond television, Goodman's versatility shone through in films, landing notable roles in "Monsters, Inc.," "The Big Lebowski," and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" giving him opportunities to showcase his talent in a variety of characters. A frequent host on "Saturday Night Live," Goodman has continually demonstrated his flair for comedy and live performance. His collaborations with the Coen brothers have been particularly fruitful, leading to several memorable film roles that underline his range as an actor. Off-screen, John Goodman's life is centered around his family. He married Anna Beth Hartzog in October 1989, and the couple welcomed their daughter Molly Evangeline Goodman in 1990. His family life and long-standing career speak volumes of his grounding and dedication to both his professional and personal life. FYI John Goodman

ABBA reunites for Swedish knighthood Former ABBA members Bjorn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Faltskog and Benny Andersson reunited this weekend to be knighted by Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. The 1970s and '80s pop icons were presented with the Royal Order of Vasa, making them Commanders of the First Class, for "very outstanding efforts in Swedish and international music life." Sweden had only bestowed this particular distinction on foreigners since 1975. The ceremony marked a rare appearance for the group, which was comprised of two couples who divorced at the height of their fame. They have not played together live since 1982, but they did record the 2021 comeback album, Voyage. There are no plans to collaborate again, however. Their music -- including hits like "Dancing Queen," "Thank You For the Music," "SOS," "Waterloo" and "The Winner Takes It All" -- is the basis of the stage shows Mamma Mia! and ABBA Voyage. music news FLASHBACK - THIS WEEK IN 1995 Hot 100 (pop singles) 1. Chicago-based comedian Vince Carone got his start in comedy by putting in the work at every bar, restaurant, and dimly lit tavern within a 500-mile radius of the Windy City. Now he’s headlining every A-listed comedy club around the Midwest, including the Kenosha Comedy Club on June 14th and 15th! You do not want to miss this hilarious show! Carone is known for his fast-paced, selfdeprecating yet honest rants about his life and family that will leave you with genuine, heartfelt laughter. Q: How did you get started in comedy? A: After graduating high school, I immediately signed up for classes at Second City in Chicago. Within two years, I started performing at Improv shows in the city. I found a place in Lincoln Park that let me perform underage, and in 2001, I got on stage with five minutes of material and gave it a go! Q: What should people expect if they come to your show? A: To have a lot of belly laughs and relate strongly to the topics that I'm sharing. Be ready to get overwhelmed with my energy and sucked in by my delivery. I guarantee at some point you’ll be saying “WTF?” to yourself. Q: What is your favorite kind of audience member at a show? A: Those who just “get it” and are there to simply laugh and are having a good time - fully locked in, which allows us to share a special moment. Q: Can you share with us a past show that was most memorable? A: In 2018, I did a 20-minute set at Zanies in Rosemont. Billy Gardell from “Mike & Molly” was in the green room after my set. He was very kind and asked if I was selling anything, and I told him I had merch but didn’t have time to pitch it. Afterwards, Billy went on stage at 11:30pm for a free set and told the audience if they wanted a picture with him after the show, they had to buy something of mine. I sold out of all my items and made over $800! Q: If you weren’t a comedian what else could you see yourself doing? A: I'd probably figure out something music related. I was in a pop-punk band for a few years before I did comedy and toured the country doing that as well. Page 18 HAPPENINGS June 6, 2024 www.hap2it.com It’s rare that a town’s charm will get me out of bed early. The postcard-pretty, lake-cuddling town of Hallstatt, two hours south of Salzburg, is one of those places. First thing in the morning, I head to the high end of town to look at the glassy waters of Lake Hallstatt. With the town’s church spire mirrored in the tranquil water, a shuttle boat cuts through its reflection, like a knife putting a swirl in the icing on a big cake. For just a moment, it disturbs this oasis of peace. Hallstatt is located in Austria’s Salzkammergut lake district, a scenic wonder that has enthralled nature lovers for centuries. This is Sound of Music country – idyllic and majestic, but not rugged, a gentle land where lakes and mountains are shuffled together like a game of 52-card pickup. Before there was Rome, there was Hallstatt. One of Europe’s oldest settlements, Hallstatt originated as a salt mining center (its name means "place of salt”). If you were to dig under some of its buildings, you’d find Roman and pre-Roman Celtic pavement stones from the ancient and prehistoric salt depot. Archaeologists claim that people have been coming here for salt since 7,000 BC (over the millennia, salt has been precious because it preserved meat). A funicular runs up the mountain to the town’s salt mine, one of many throughout the region that offers tours. At the mine, visitors slip into overalls, meet their guide, and hike deep into the mountain to learn about the history of salt. A highlight of the visit is riding down long banisters, minerstyle, from one floor to the next … praying for no splinters. When I first discovered Hallstatt, this was a remote community at the far end of a long, dead-end lake. Though tourism has trampled some of its charm, vivid cultural traditions still survive. Traditional green felt hats distinguished by jaunty decorative feathers are big in Austria. On my first trip here, when I was just a teenybopper, my dad and I each bought a hat and had a friendly competition filling it with souvenir pins and fancy feathers. Forty years later, I happened to be in town during the annual feather-inthe-hat party. Local men – many with finely carved pipes and handlebar mustaches – strutted around in lederhosen and their finest Tyrolean-type hats, each with a proud feather sprouting from the rim. For centuries, the town had no road access, so people came and went by boat. You’ll still see the traditional wide, flat Fuhr boats, designed to carry heavy loads of salt in shallow water. On a recent visit, a local friend took me for a spin in his Fuhr. As he lunged rhythmically on the single oar, he said, “An hour on the lake is like a day of vacation.” When I asked about the oar lock, which looked like a skinny dog-chew doughnut, he told me it was “made from the gut of a bull. Not of cow, but a bull.” By Rick Steves Scenic wonder in Austria’s Hallstatt travel Hallstatt, in Austria’s Lake District, is ideal for wandering, boating, and relaxing The Global Entry mobile app can now be used by trusted travelers at eight new airports, according to an announcement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The app enables arrival processing while still on the plane rather than forcing air passengers to wait in lines. "CBP has prioritized Global Entry arrival to enhance the speed, accuracy, and security of the arrival process for trusted travelers," CBP's Troy A. Miller said in a statement. The additional airports where Global Entry can now be used are Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Nashville International Airport, Houston International, Kansas City International Airport, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, San Antonio International Airport, St. Louis Lambert International Airport, and Toledo Express Airport. The app is available at Google Play Store or Apple's App Store and is part of the Department of Homeland Security's trusted traveler program. It can be used at 53 international ports of entry in the United States. People who apply for the program go through extensive and rigorous background checks, as well as in-person interviews, before being allowed to enroll. By the end of fiscal 2024, Global Entry should be available to use at all 77 U.S. international airports, officials said. Eligible travelers using the app can avoid using portals or kiosks, shortening the time spent waiting in line for passport inspections. Travelers can apply with the CBP online for the trusted traveler program that will enable them to use the Global Entry app. By Doug Cunningham Global Entry app expands to more airports The Federal Aviation Administration said it was investigating an avoided collision on the runway at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport where a takeoff had to be canceled as another plane was landing. American Airlines flight 2134 was cleared to launch at the same time another flight had been cleared to land on across-runway, potentially putting it in the path of the leaving flight. "An air traffic controller canceled the takeoff clearance for American Airlines Flight 2134 because another aircraft was cleared to land on an intersecting runway," an FAA spokesperson told NBC News. The FAA said it is investigating how the flight was cleared to take off in the first place, needing the quick thinking of an air traffic controller to avoid a possible collision. "The safety of our customers and team members is our top priority, and we're grateful to our crew for their professionalism," American Airlines said. "We will support the FAA in its investigation." The flight, which was scheduled to leave for Boston Logan International Airport, was delayed until the afternoon, some four hours later. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., who represents the district where the airport is located, said the incident was another sign that Reagan National Airport is overbooked and needs flight relief. "I'm relieved no one was hurt," Kaine said. "But this incident underscores again that DCA is at capacity," Kaine said on X. "This shows why [the] Senate action to jam even more flights into DCA was so dangerous. The FAA must resist any new flights that compromise safety." Don’t just hope for someone to praise your ideas and creations, instead focus on self-validation. You might not enjoy other people’s company as much as you anticipated. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): A challenging event could lead to a positive outcome. Resist the temptation to point a finger towards someone else if a costly mistake is made. Consider putting major purchases on the back burner for a few days. GEMINI (May 21-June 20):Be mindful of any subtle ethical questions that might need to be addressed before making a move or starting anything new. Optimism and fairness could be in short supply so spread love and light into the world. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Something may remind you that money is not everything and that it’s the thought that truly counts. You may have an opportunity to grow closer to loved ones or discover someone with a similar outlook on life. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Remain cautious of being either overly confident or too trusting. This may not be the time to put your trust in something that is not proven. Instead, consider focusing your attention on aspects of life that you can control. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It’s important to prioritize your happiness as satisfying others may be a rare occurrence. Your good intentions may not always be understood. Don’t let the fear of possible criticism keep you from being your authentic self. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Focus and discipline are necessary for success but it's also important to embrace opportunities for leisure. Although you strive to make things simple and efficient, it could sometimes be more enjoyable if they were more complex. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Take the opportunity to steer the wheel of your life. You may find it easy to approach a tiresome situation with good humor and grace. Consider waiting to make a major purchase or change an important plan. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You may find yourself out of alignment with someone. Your mood could soon change so consider avoiding any confrontations. Seemingly-unreasonable rules you are required to comply with may cause resentment. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Look for the good in every person or situation. Shifting your focus to kindness and positivity can make a significant difference. Don’t engage if you find yourself amongst people who might have an appetite for gossip. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Address financial obligations in a timely fashion. You may gravitate towards big price tag items to keep up with others but always prioritize quality. Consider taking your time to sign any important contracts. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): It may not be necessary to go to extremes to get someone’s attention. You may use grace and flexibility to demonstrate your competence to those who might be skeptical. Organization could alleviate frustration.
