It’s nice to see historical verdicts handed down for animal abusers. This is the largest fine in the history of the Animal Welfare Act. Thirty-five million for a laboratory using beagle dogs for experimentation. I can’t wait to get to my next duty station and network with the animal people there. Every place I go, I try to get involved with animal protection causes. It’s been so interesting learning about the biggest problems from state to state (and this time overseas) and how advocates can come together to fix them.We all can find a way to motivate ourselves on an issue that furthers society. I can’t think of anything less divisive and nonpolitical than saving the lives of creatures without a voice. However politics exist everywhere. Navigating through these complex relationships and pushing change is never easy. However, if it were easy, then the rewards like this one would not be so sweet! Stay tuned for more animal welfare experts on Season 3 of the S.O.S. podcast coming in October! https://lnkd.in/d4WrtZ74

Theresa Carpenter, APRᐩM Agree - really good news in the fight against some pretty horrible people doing some pretty horrible things to animals. Thanks for sharing something positive at a time when it feels like the dark forces of Mordor are having their way with the world...

This is so sad. How can an entire country be so uneducated about dog training? This nation has managed to get breed bans passed through Parliment since 1991. This past October, XL Bully Breeds were added. Requiring a muzzle and registration does not fix dangerous dogs. Accountability for owners who refuse to care for their animals properly is the solution. We require a person to be licensed to own a fire arm. Why are we not requiring the same for a dog which in the wrong hands is a weapon?!?!?!I see what has happened here in England and can only shake my head in disgust. Why this ever became a law is frightening. This is a no-brainer because we’d instead rather apply a knee-jerk response than expend the resources needed to fix the real problem. This is why the causes of animal welfare and reform are so important to me. Nobody can seem to understand why this is still happening, but people will continue to die and be mauled until they actually fix the real problem. Make it stop! 😡😡😡

Challenge yourself. Today, I’m exploring Riga, Latvia, with a two-hour walking tour of the Old Town neighborhood. The app Get Your Guide has opened a new world 🌎 of possibilities for me to learn and discover a new area, mainly because the tours are friendly to those on a budget, which I always appreciate. Then, of course, there’s somebody there to tell you things you had no idea 💡 about a particular area. I’m here for a NATO conference, but I have been making it a habit to work travel when I can to stay a little later or come in one day early and get a feel for the city. I did the same in Athens. My husband Harry is not a city person, but for me, it’s a grand treat, primarily if the city area is not too crowded; I love to walk around, checking out the shops, sampling the food, and exploring the architecture. Overall, it’s the total immersion of a new place that speaks to me. Many times, even if you don’t have a reason to travel, you can find a neighboring downtown, book a cheap Airbnb or inexpensive motel, and immerse yourself in a city. Times like this, I recall a famous ABBA song. After all, there is a ABBA song for every mood! These are the lyrics to describe my mood today! I'm the street you walkThe language you talkI am the cityThe skyline is me, and the energyI am the cityThe famous hotels and co*cktail barsAnd the funny smellsAnd the turmoil, the cars, and the peopleThe air that you're breathing is meYes, I am the city; you let me be! #CityLife

Be present and involved. One memorable experience of this tour that will stay with me is the quarterly meetings with the All-Party Parliamentary Dog Advisory Welfare group. These gatherings, held in the historic House of Commons, bring together rescue organizations, policymakers, and dog lovers from all over the United Kingdom to discuss their work. For a couple of hours, we share best practices and discuss solutions for issues unique to a particular aspect of dog welfare. This past month, we celebrated the contributions of assistance dogs. These animals cover the spectrum of dogs that can sense a seizure coming on to animals that can relieve panic attacks. Sadly, many businesses do not recognize service/assistance dogs despite the laws protecting owners’ rights to bring them into commercial establishments. Additionally, there are no guardrails to ensure people do not abuse the grace given to those who need an animal for their day-to-day functions. I have spoken with many flight attendants in the United States who are fed up with “fake” service dogs. They feel these aggressive dogs are a liability and safety threat to other passengers. Regardless of those who skirt the laws, these service animals perform so many vital skills for their humans. And, if we want to fix the problems with these issues, safe spaces to talk about them are necessary. Thank you so much to Dr Marc Abraham OBE for leading these extraordinary meetings to meet these incredible animals and learn more about the power of the human-animal bond. I will depart London this September and intend to carry this model forward one day to my community. I hope to take part in organizing similar events. They matter so much! We can all do something to make the world a better place. #APDAWG

I met an Americans Airlines flight attendant through the cruising FB groups, and she recently shared this story about her recent experience hosting an Honor Flight. Thought I would share…She writes, “Hi Theresa! I thought you might appreciate this...I'm a Flight Attendant for American Airlines. This morning, I worked an Honor Flight, where we took the Vets to DC to see their memorial. We had 3 WWII Veterans onboard, one of which was a woman!! 🥰 She was a secretary in the Navy and so excited to tell me a story about her flying in a blimp. ☺️Anyway, I showed her my video of the Navy ship (she filmed during Miami Fleet a LHA from a cruise ship) and her face lit up like a Christmas tree! She grabbed my phone an exclaimed, "OOOOHHH," with a great big smile on her face, especially when it zooms in to show all the sailors! 😊 When she gave me my phone back, she held my hand while I knelt down on the floor, thanked her for her service and told her how important it is for me to make sure that I always recognize my lady Veterans. Here's a picture that her Guardian took of us. This beautiful lady is 101 years old!! It was such an HONOR and pleasure to meet her today!!! 🥰❤️”With all the negative news going around, figured we’d need a little reminder of what really matters. Connecting with others! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I’ve said it before, and I will scream it from the rooftops. Leaders are communicators. If you need somebody else to write your remarks and can’t take the bullets and other prep material staff provides using your own stories and authenticity, my respect for you drops a notch.#TheresaTalks

Imagine having to take a life in the line of duty, develop PTSD as a result of your trauma, then endure a hostile working environment because you had the courage to seek care? That's exactly what happened to Michael Sugrue. Now he is on a mission to make sure this stops happening to other 1st responders, so he is exposing the mental health crisis impacting this community. His bestselling book 📚 is a must read for those who want inspiration and support. Thanks as always Parade Deck for the wrap-up and highlights of my conversation with this S.O.S. returning guest. #ChangeAgent

When everyone is singing 🎶 the same song on the unsustainability of our Armed Forces, it’s time to listen up. We are doing this to ourselves. I have seen this kind of waste firsthand in the media world when we are swimming in actionable requirements, but decide, for example, to waste that money on complex analytic software nobody understands how to read properly, or would be interested or willing to make different decisions based on the data. 📈 People want to do the right thing. Let’s help them get there. #fixthemilitary

“Nobody will do the work unless you do.” ✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️Sometimes, I feel like we have a lot of people who want the benefits of success but are unwilling to go through the grind. There is a reason I podcast nearly every week. There is a reason I kept taking the hardest jobs in my career field. There is a reason I challenge myself to quit drinking alcohol, get help for my past traumatic experiences, or exercise almost daily. Nothing happens without effort and hard work. Nothing happens by getting out of work. Nothing happens when you wait for things to happen. Life will simply pass you by. It doesn’t mean you don’t take breaks and enjoy yourself at times, but it means why have a job that you simply sit at a desk all day, bs with colleagues, and produce nothing of value? Why have a job where you constantly make up execuses not to be there? It’s on you to find your carefully crafted path and your dream life. Nobody will do that for you.
