Lady Cardinals split with Boyne Falls By Ryan Bokas BOYNE FALLS -- The Johannesburg-Lewiston softJohannesburg-Lewiston ball team traveled to Boyne Falls for a Friday evening doubleheader against the Lady Loggers. The visitors opened up the series with a convincing 8-3 win, then proceeded to drop a highly entertaining close battle in the second game 6-3. Coach Mark Peppin’s Cardinals got it done in the first game with solid defense, good pitching, and consistent offense. The girls used the positive energy gained through a variety of catchy, uplifting chants and cheers from the dugout to ease to the 8-3 win. In the second game the Cardinals bats were tested early and often as Boyne Falls pitcher Melody Ann Harmon threw a stellar game. The pint-sized pitcher used good location matched with deceptive power to keep the visiting team bats at bay bay..

Down by one run in the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals’ defense gave up a two-run single to go down by the eventual final score 6-3. Snowbirds off to soaring start Sweep of Alanson pushes St. Mary to 3-0 mark after first week of new season By Bob DeLong GAYLORD – The St. Mary baseball team got the new season off to a solid start last week, taking a snowy 14-0 win over Boyne Falls in the Eskimo-like opener on Tuesday, April 10, and pounding out a 5-1, 18-0 sweep over Alanson on Friday. There were plenty of Snowbird highlights. In the sweep of Alanson, senior centerfielder Pat Switalski had a stellar day, going an incredible 7-for-8 at the plate with five runs, five stolen bases and three RBIs. And he wasn’t wasn’t alone. Senior lefty Aaron Myler fired a three-hitter in the opener with Alanson, giving up three hits while securing his first varsity victory on the hill. Myler threw an efficient 71 pitches and swung a big stick also, going 4-for-6 for the day with 2 RBIs (playing first base in game two). We still have to work on many things, (we had two runners picked off bases and two other runners were doubled up on line drives), but all-inall it was a great afternoon defensively, offensively and pitching. Switalski swatted two RBI singles and scored twice and Gabe Nowicki grilled an RBI single. “Downtown” Brown belted an RBI single and stole a base while Jake Blanzy and Mike Stutesman each scored twice and Brendan Nowicki and Spyhalski each had RBIs. By Tom Johnson GAYLORD -- The Gaylord High golf team is ready to get the 2012 season under way April 17 in Cadillac. It is the Cadillac Invitational and it also counts as the first Big North Conference meet. The Blue Devils will once again be led by super ballstriking senior Alex Dombrowski, who is coming off an outstanding junior year where he was named as a first-team All-State member in Division 2, and earned first-team All-Conference honors for the third straight time. We expect Alex to pick right up where he left off after having a great summer season. Alex averaged a stellar 75.1 strokes per round and never shot higher than in the 70s all season long.

Full-Log Custom Home set deep in the forest adjoins State Land

Spring Cleaning Guide Compliments of Ed Wohlfiel Make spring cleaning less of a chore by following these smarter--and mostly greener--tips for this annual rite of homeownership homeownership.. Part 1 of 4 Bathrooms When it's time to get down and dirty, many people start with the bathroom. Allen Rathey, founder of The Housekeeping Channel, says removing mineral deposits, rust, and such from toilets doesn't have to mean chemical warfare. Don rubber gloves and use a pumice stone to erase stubborn stains. If you want more scouring power, Rathey recommends mixing baking soda with acidic vinegar. The concoction is just a s effective as conventional cleaners, and there are no toxic fumes to inhale. This approach works equally well on tub and shower stains. Buy your supplies in bulk to save. A 64-ounce bottle of vinegar costs about $4; a 12pound bag of baking soda, about $7. Both items can be used throughout the house. For just $1 you can mix equal parts vinegar and water in a 32-ounce spray bottle to make a terrific allpurpose surface cleaner. That's about $4 cheaper than buying a spray cleaner at the store. Spring cleaning is the perfect time to extract dirt from porous grouted surfaces. For tile floors use your usual cleaner, but don't mop. Instead, run a wet/dry vac, which will suck contaminants out of the grout. Mopping drives the grime into the grout rather than removing it. According to Rathey Rathey,, grout can harbor stinky bacteria that leave a bad odor in the bathroom. This technique is more time-consuming than mopping, but it's worthwhile to do at least once a year.

By Jim Akans Winding through the forest roads leading to this magnificent, full-log custom home located just south of Waters, the beauty and tranquility of the surrounding northern woodlands is simply breathtaking. Upon arriving at the two-and-a-half two-and-a-half acre site this stunning home is built upon, and surveying the thousands of acres of State Land behind the property, the verdict was in; this is truly what up-North living is all about. Constructed with solid, full logs, and featuring durable, low maintenance metal roofing, this home is built to endure the test of time. Even the detached two-and-a-half car garage is made with full logs and has a metal roof, and there’s there’s more of a surprise waiting inside as the interior of garage is finished in pine wood. Now that’s an exceptional level of detail. Extraordinary attention to detail is the primary theme inside the main home as well. The main living area combines an open living, dining and kitchen space highlighted by a twostory cathedral ceiling and anchored by a gorgeous stone Perma Log fireplace. There is a fantastic custom-built snack bar between the kitchen

and main living room that has floor to ceiling posts fashioned from pine tree trunks (you can still see the shape of the base of the tree near the floor). Custom woodwork abounds in this home, including full log exterior walls, beautiful wood flooring, handmade furniture and cabinetry. cabinetry. The result is an interior that blends seamlessly with the natural outdoor surroundings. Living space is at 1,320 square feet (not including the full basem*nt), featuring a large main level bedroom and an open upper level loft that features a bedroom with a walk-out deck offering stunning views of the State Land behind the home. The main level bath is as spacious as most bedrooms in a typical home. home. The bath features a huge, jetted tub and separate walk-in shower. shower. The laundry area is located in the f ull basem*nt, which also offers lots of extra storage and work space. A wide, wrap-around deck extends across the side and front of the home, presenting the perfect spot for relaxing and enjoying the natural splendor of the setting. While very private, there are several other log homes scattered along the road this home is situated on. All of these homes have access to a park area that fronts a creek leading to pristine Bradford Lake. This is a one-of-akind offering for those

seeking the ultimate northern Michigan get-away, all at a listing price of just $199,000. Call Ed Wohlfeil today for a private showing. (989) 732-1707 or email [emailprotected] ed@northernrealestate .com .
