I have a eos R5, but i think i go back to sony. Reason; lens line up and lens mount open sourcing, and RF lens prices.....

With sony you also have very good third party support, and while i like the canon "color science", the sony colors are very good also now.

The canon RF prices are outrageous: the 50mm 1.2 cost here (in belgium) 2750 EURO. Other lenses are also getting higher prices due to a price update. Thats when i decided "enough is enough"

If those prices where more reasonable, i definitly stayed with canon.

As a general rule, I stick to the system I have. My only big jump was from Canon APS-C DSLR to Canon FF ML, which has cost me quite a sum.

Each time you change system, even with available adapters, you lose money. In the long run I think one is better off with incremental updates rather than with changing the whole system. YMMV.

BTW, I was pleasantly surprised by the RF 24-240. I know it takes digital corrections, but that is the only way you can have an affordable 10x zoom. The low-light capability of the R and R5 makes up for the narrow aperture. The very expensive RF lenses are also class leading.

What matters to me may not matter to you, so this is just my personal opinion.

So maybe its better to wait for a while and setting cash aside to buy a RF lens then to go back you mean? Maybe i can do that yes, but it doesnt change the fact that those RF lenses are ridiculous priced, i mean, why would canon do that? Thats not a good way to atract people to their system from other systems....

well i guess you have done the maths and your losses selling your used canon kit are less than what you pay for new GM lenses /body...ot are you losing $2 to save $1

I fully agree that the RF lens price increases are hugely annoying!

The normal market conditions are currently overruled by the supply chain shortages and the vendors like Canon can short-term optimize their RF-line profit by increasing prices when demand is higher than supplies.

The markets will normalize and prices will start to decrease again. In the meantime I'll buy or use EF mount lenses from Canon, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina etc. And with mirrorless cameras we no longer need to deal with inconsistent AF :-).

The RF mount footprint is growing rapidly and the 3rd. party lens suppliers will need to address that market opportunity sooner than later.

Over here in Germany price for the RF50/1.2 has been falling, then climbing -- probably due to production losses (COVID) AND of course strong demand from markets.

In the meantime, Sony's 50/1.2 has been staying at 2.300EUR flat.

I am not sure, if Canon is really outrageous, or if you should look for better priced dealers?

Not that I care one way or the other what people use, but threads like this always ignite my curiosity. How many lenses are you going through that a complete brand switch is going to make a meaningful difference in your budget? Did you do a break even analysis?

Sunk costs? How much can you recover when selling existing equipment? Replacement costs? What lenses am I actually going to buy and how much do I save on the alternative? (As opposed to this lens I’ll never buy is $3,000 vs this lens I’ll never buy at $2,500)?

Just curious what that analysis looks like.

”Going back” implies you’ve done this whole brand switch thing before. Did you sell your old equipment? How much did you lose, if anything?

I feel you on the high prices and hope that once the various supply shortages start to diminish prices might come down. Hopefully third party lenses will also start appearing from Sigma and Tamron... Until then it seems like prices of everything are going up (at least here in the US). Trips to the grocery store and gas station have gotten pretty expensive lately so for me photography related purchases are pretty much on hold for a while anyway.

You are right. If I do such analysis I am loosing a lot of money. Better stay with what I have. I did the switch before and yes it’s not worth it.
Btw I really love canon. Going to buy one lens at a time to spread the cost.

consider buying used (maybe a small saving) or adapting EF glass (plenty of choice and lots available both Canon and 3rd party).

I really, really would love to see some kind of break-even analysis on this “switching” systems thing. Based on my personal experience with buying and selling, i would NEVER switch systems, and that’s not because I love Canon, it’s because it is a huge financial hit to the bank account and there is a lot of wasted time. And anyone who does this clearly didn’t think through the costs of buying into said system, so they likely haven’t done a switch analysis.

Maybe this is a job for those YouTubers who seem to have unlimited budgets for stuff like this, well, at least the ones with large subscriber counts.

Also, on the whole, I’m not convinced that RF lenses are really that much better than EF lenses to justify a complete switch for someone already owning several EF lenses (I would certainly buy only RF if coming in new, for the lenses I use heavily). I currently have 5 RF lenses and I sold my 100-400 mk 2 to get the 100-500 RF because this is an important lens for how I like to do my photography. I currently have no plans to replace my 500mm f/4 mk 2, but who knows. I have thought about selling both my 500/4 and 400DO/4 and going for an RF 600, but even that seems like a waste since I got both of those EF lenses at very good prices and they remain in really good shape and give great results for me. If I were 30, and had a good 40 more years ahead of me for photography, that might impact my decision.

so how much money will you save selling your canon gear at second-hand prices and buying new sony gear ??

in the UK the RF50 f1.2 is gone up 150 pounds,,, that's less than the fuel i put in my cars this week

Just because you have an RF body does not mean you have to buy RF glass. The EF to RF adapter works seamlessly. EF glass is just as good on RF or DSLR bodies.

Native Sony glass is just as expensive as Canon RF. With Sony you are pretty much relegated to third party glass because they still don't have a full system that can compete with Canon EF. The majority of those third party lenses can be bought for RF or EF too.

It is going to take several years for Canon to equal the EF lineup in RF glass.

If you really want to save money there is an endless supply of used EF glass out there. I would not buy new EF glass now, since it will depreciate more than usual over the next ten years.

I am still wary of Sony colour, after my first experience.

I said it from the beginning when the R6 and R5 with their ridiculous prices came on the scene... Canon tossed us DSLR users to the wolves.. then the mirrorless marketing hype began.. now it is taking its toll with RF lens prices ... I'll stay with my DSLR's until all this shakes out after having a bad experience a few months ago with an R6 that wouldn't autofocus after only having it about 2 weeks --I sent it back for a refund.. and never looked back.. Canon is not playing nice is all I can say

you are right about those prices , but why you feel the need to tell ''us" that you are going back to Sony is a mistery to me .

Perhaps that is not what they want to do?

Now this is pure speculation on my part, but perhaps Canon has a different agenda, like moving up market where the best profits are?
