Hi, low oil pressure light stays on in my 1862 with Kohler M18 after start up. Oil level is correct. After riding for 20 min the light went off. Next start up - the same problem, but it took longer for the light to go off and the engine started to slow dow due to overheating. I am using SAE30 and NAPA's gold filter (cross-referenced to the Kohler's original).

I took the closure plate off, inspected bypass valve, oil pump, blowed the air through oil passages - everything looks good. Ordered the new bypass valve just in case. I will also intall OEM oil filter and try using 10W30.

Any ideas what could be wrong? Could it be the non-OEM filter?

You better put a gage on it and see what you have for pressure. If you ran it for 20 mins with low oil pressure it's probably hurt.

10W30 in the summer will not increase your oil pressure.

If I were you I'd be tearing that engine down to see what is going on before it throws a rod. If it slowed down from lack of lubrication, the rods and possibly the mains are shot. Any more running at this point and the only thing you can do is make it worse.

Thank you very much for the advice. I am stil waiting for a back-ordered releief valve. I will put the closure plate back and run it briefly to check the pressure. When I got the tractor with the house 2 years ago it had 800 hrs on it. It now has 850and was running ok until this season.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
