Loftus-Cheek: 'We can go far'

Milan were surprise Champions League semi-finalists last season, with cross-city rivals Inter eliminating them before losing 1-0 against Manchester City in the final. Can they repeat the trick this year, or maybe even go one step further?

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who joined the club this summer from Chelsea and was outstanding today, certainly thinks so.

After the game, he said: "We have a really talented team and I think we can go far. I just wanted to play and be confident, it was a great team performance. We’re back in the mix for the group now."

His team-mate Yunus Musah added: "We had a great start, then we conceded, but because we had started well we kept the structure and kept going for it. Today we were hard to break down, it was different to the game in Paris. The winning goal was vintage Giroud!"

Some love for Calabria in our 'Discuss' section!

In The Athletic's discussion tab here, there's been plenty of praise for Milan captain Davide Calabria.

When asked whose performance surprised them the most, our subscribers had this to say.

Panji R: Calabria.

Nicola T: Leao was amazing, but Loftus-Cheek really showed his physical superpowers and his ability to make smart runs. Solid, charismatic game by Giroud, Calabria and Theo too.

Skriniar: Always special to play at San Siro

Milan Skriniar made a dream start tonight, the former Inter Milan defender stooping to give PSG the lead inside 10 minutes on his return to the San Siro.

But his side were pegged back and ending up losing on his old home turf.

After the match, he told UEFA's media: "It’s always special for me to play here after six years, and it was tough against Milan."

PSG looked short of ideas in attack

He has only been there a little over four months but PSG looked short of ideas going forwards tonight, not something I expect from a Luis Enrique team.

Their only goal came after poor Milan marking at a set piece, and though they tested Mike Maignan a couple of times and both Lee and Dembele hit the woodwork, those opportunities came from moments of individual skill rather than via a cohesive and well-oiled attacking structure.

Inverted wingers Dembele and Mbappe were double-marked out of the game, and both Randal Kolo Muani and Goncalo Ramos were peripheral as the central striking figure.

Slightly worrying signs considering the collective strength of attacking players at Enrique's disposal.

Vitinha: 'We have to do better'

Vitinha spoke to Canal+ after PSG's loss: "We knew it was going to be a difficult game, especially with their supporters behind them, but that’s no excuse. We have to do better. We failed to play our game with patience and that prevented us from gaining control of the tie.

"The second goal changed everything, but the truth is, our way of playing must stay the same – but that’s difficult. It’s difficult to find space, and to remain patient, in order to find the second goal."

Calabria with a real captain's performance

Milan vs PSG live updates (43)

Davide Calabria isn't the most entertaining footballer to watch. He only has seven Italy caps. And right-back isn't the most sexy position at all.

But Calabria put in a superb shift in defence for his Rossoneri tonight. He and Tijjani Reijnders helped lock up Kylian Mbappe and were constantly a thorn in the side of the PSG attackers, denying them time, space and comfort.

As an (extremely) technically limited defender myself, I can appreciate those kind of gritty, exhausting under-the-radar performances. He's earned his corn tonight.

Stefano Pioli spoke to beIN Sport after Milan's win: "The players played with their heart, with energy, it’s what we wanted. We managed to work as a team against a great side.

"The more players are available the better for us. The team worked well together, and deserved the win. Now we need to perform well against Dortmund and overtake them."

Marquinhos: Giroud's go-ahead goal changed the game

Milan vs PSG live updates (53)

(Photo: Getty Images)

Marquinhos spoke to Canal+ after PSG's defeat: "We knew about the quality within this Milan side, we shouldn’t ignore that. It was a high-level match. I thought we started well, we controlled proceedings, and we did what we were advised to do. That said, I think Milan exploited their strengths, they were direct and tried to advance up the pitch as quickly as possible.

“The second goal changed the game. We were playing well, they hadn’t put us under too much pressure. It was a cross into the middle and we know the quality Giroud has. We tried to press them, but they exploited the space.

"We had difficulty finding space. Before, Milan were more open, and we managed to find openings. But after the second goal they defended well, they knew what they needed to do. That’s what caused us problems."

Paris Saint-Germain have now lost two of their last three Champions League matches, the other defeat a 4-1 blowout at the hands of Newcastle United last month.

That's as many losses as PSG had suffered in the preceding 18 matches in the competition (W12 D4 L2).

Updated Group F standings

Milan vs PSG live updates (81)

Milan take their first win of the Champions League season, lifting them into third place in Group F.

Dortmund's win over Newcastle earlier today means they end the day in first place, dropping Paris Saint-Germain into second.

With two games for each team left, the entire group is within three points! Compare that to Man City's group, where first and last place are separated by 11 points.

AC Milan took their chances, PSG did not

AC Milan’s bold approach pays off. Pioli's side were so impressive in midfield, especially on the counter-attack. The visitors just couldn't get to grips with their runners, with Rafael Leao outstanding and Ruben Loftus-Cheek dominant.

PSG had chances, and started the game superbly too. But in an end-to-end battle they were not ruthless enough and Milan confidently saw the game out.

A result that throws this group wide open…
