Departmental OverviewThe English Department is the largest department in the Division of Art & Humanities in the College of Letters and Science, with ~50 permanent faculty and 9 permanent staff, a large cohort of undergraduate majors, and a distinguished graduate program.
Position SummaryUnder the general guidance of the Department Manager and the Director of Undergraduate Studies, and in collaboration with other advising staff but with a high degree of independence, engages in the administrative and advising aspects of the undergraduate English program (including the English and Medieval Studies minors), specializing in curriculum and enrollment management.
The English Department is the largest unit in the division of Arts and Humanities in the College of Letters and Science, with an annual student enrollment of approximately 5000 and approximately 400-500 declared majors at a given time.

ResponsibilitiesProvides Academic Advising
- Advises students and faculty on departmental, college, and university policies and procedures; reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions; provides input to curriculum planning in collaboration with faculty officers and staff colleagues.
- Provides advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including academic progress, satisfaction of major and minor requirements. Advises and guides new and continuing instructors on Departmental, College and University policies and procedures that pertain to undergraduate student affairs within the Department of English.
- Reviews, evaluates and advises student petitions for exceptions to requirements within the Department of English. Advises students on a wide range of course possibilities and/or ways to complete degree requirements that may not be clearly defined. Advises on special eligibility requirements such as Honors Programs, Fellowships and Scholarships within the Department of English.
- Responsible for interpreting campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination.
- Assist students recognize key non- academic issues, and determine proper referrals for students whose academics may be adversely affected by mental health, study habits, financial, personal or family issues or crises and initiate contact on students’ behalf for additional therapeutic counseling and/or assistance from other units. Tracks Student Progress
- Confirms that students have met requirements for degree completion in some cases when there are no clear precedents or articulations, such as interdisciplinary programs or when transfer work is involved.
- Identifies students with GPA or progress problems, advises students, and recommends appropriate courses of action by the department.
- Identifies barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues, and makes appropriate referrals for therapeutic counseling and/or assistance from other units.
Curriculum and Enrollment Management
- Works directly with the Director of Undergraduate Studies to plan annual departmental curriculum.
- Provides and analyzes statistics on enrollment trends, instructors’ teaching assignments, and course relief and leaves—both for curriculum planning and for the use of the Chair, the Manager, and relevant committee chairs.
- Advises department manager, the Chair, and Directors of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies on complex curricular issues and recommends courses of action.
- Utilizing knowledge of course content, facilitates new course approval and curriculum revisions through interaction with the Academic Senate; prepares and submits course approval requests to the Committee on Courses and revises the department’s section of the General Catalog to reflect changes in faculty and course offerings.
- Independently develops teaching schedules for all English Department courses, consulting instructor preferences and balancing with departmental and campus needs. Enters schedule requests in campus systems.
- Coordinates course scheduling with other departments for cross-listed and room-share courses, and for faculty with joint appointments.
- Revises class schedules, obtains new classrooms, and publicizes changes throughout the year, as needs arise. Devises solutions to classroom space and scheduling problems, taking into account the curriculum needs of students, the needs of faculty, and available options.
Required Qualifications
- Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Knowledge of and/or can quickly learn University-specific computer application programs (e.g. SIS).
- Knowledge of and/or can quickly learn University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
- Solid verbal and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal skills.
- Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
- Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
- Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Salary & BenefitsThis is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $70,000.00 - $85,000.00.
